Hello Arts Barn.
Hoping I'll be able to post more work. Don't have many pictures with me at the moment- this one happened to be in my email. Its a picture of one of the drawings from my show- post framing by my dear Gram.

  1. Hey Hayden!

I haven't checked this blog technology thing in ages, but figured i'd see what was up and leave a comment and maybe some new work...

Anyways, this piece looks beautiful! Even upon just a quick, rudimentary glance, it seems to elicit a strong emotional or almost sentimental response from the viewer. I guess this is probably because of the apparent attention to details and nuances in describing the different textures and atmospheric qualities present in such an environment. The trees also appear as almost portraits, with the emphasis on the upright one in the foreground. The angle and placement of the two trees in the background (arcing lazily inwards and bracketing the whole image) seems to also work effectively bringing together the piece.

The overlapping and interwoven bare branches of the trees seems like it could be an interesting and worthwhile exploration in and of itself, but also seems to integrate nicely as a frame (or a web, i guess) for the rest of the drawing.

It's too bad you don't have any close-up photos or scans of this drawing, as I'd really like to see how it reads when the mark-making is evident close up. If there were any suggestions I could make, I suppose that I might be lean somewhat towards a bit more dynamic or unconventional composition. Although I actually think (as I was writing above), it's a fairly technically sound composition, balance, and arrangement of different textures and patterns, I somehow feel like it's also a little bit rigid in how the main tree is nearly dead-center, straight up and down and snuggled in between the other 3 main subjects (the other 2 trees and the house) in the background. I really like this piece quite a lot, so maybe this would just be a suggestion for stuff to play around with on the next one, but in my own work lately, I've been really trying to figure out how I can beat down traditional or predictable compositions. i'm JUST starting to feel even a little bit confident technically in how i'm rendering things or describing textures and materials through each specific medium. the point being, now that I'm starting to feel more confidently technically, composition always seems like something that I should really experiment with. you're technically WAY beyond me, so I'd be really interested in seeing where your explorations took you in comparison to mine.

the second suggestion would just be to consider a frame which is a bit more congrous with the subject matter. this is pretty subjective here, but I would have liked to have seen a much smaller matte and maybe not a perfectly centered location for the drawing as I almost feel like this matte compresses and squeezes in on the drawing. There's so much detail, light, and detail in the piece, that the matte seems like a vast void in comparison and I think that the image would seem much more expansive or comfortable space with a smaller matte. maybe not, i'm not completely sure on that actually. i do, however, not really like the frame. i'm prone to thinking that maybe a nice subdued, simple wood frame would go nicely with this piece. although this is a nice looking frame and that's awesome that your grandma made it for you (actually now I kind of feel like a jerk for saying anything about a frame your grandma made for you...), i think that a simple, dark, smooth wood frame would sit much more naturally with the subject matter while also posing as much less distracting as the current one. once again, this is just my gut-reaction and I'm pretty positive Allison would love the framing of this for some reason.

alright! anyways, that's it! great work, looks awesome. sorry this is so long-winded, i've been pretty pent up just drawing roses, skulls, and daggers at work every day and have missed working and talking with all the art-barners. i'll post up some new pictures soon and try to comment on some of the other stuff up here...

    hope all's well,
